Healthy Eating plans and Weight Loss Advice
Weight loss and dieting
It is very sad to say that almost two thirds of Australians are overweight or obese. These extra kilos can increase the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and certain cancers. Indeed it is known that just losing a small amount of weight can lower the risk of health issues.
Most people who want to lose weight usually go on “fad” diets. The weight-loss industry is worth more than $635 million in Australia. These diets usually promise rapid weight loss. However they are not based on science, and often deprive you of essential nutrients that the body requires. They also can be responsible for:
slowing the body’s metabolism resulting in one putting on weight more easily in the future
constant feelings of increased appetite, hunger and food cravings
rapid weight loss, usually due to water loss and lean muscle, followed by rapid gain
lower body temperature which might also reduce the metabolic rate
Reduced muscle tissue and bone density
an eating disorder e.g. anorexia nervosa or bulimia
fatigue, insomnia and headaches, and
irregular bowel habits.
